Blackstone Baths and Beds is located at 410 Austin, in the Downtown Hot Springs District of Truth or Consequences, New Mexico. It was originally built sometime in the 1920's and 1930's with very small apartments and a public bath house in the back. In later years (perhaps in the 1950's and 1960's) more construction was done on the building to add a kitchen and bathroom to each apartment.
By the time we purchased The Blackstone in late 2005, the building had suffered from many years of neglect and ruin. The small original apartments were not viable by current standards, so we formed a plan to combine rooms and make larger lodging suites for weekend and retreat guests. Also, since the town is named after a TV show, we decided to theme each lodging room after a TV show or character (such as "I Love Lucy", Roy Rogers, etc).
Today Blackstone Baths and Beds is at an exciting stage of completion. We have completed three luxury lodging rooms, with plans for 4 more units completed by April 2008. Each lodging room has a large custom tub for unlimited private soaking in the hot mineral spring water. Where possible we have carefully restored original features (such as hardwood floors, doors and windows, vintage appliances, etc). We take great pride in the fact that this complete restoration maintains the historic integrity of the property, while upgrading the interior of the building to satisfy demands of the modern traveler or hot springs enthusiast.
With such a focus on historic integrity, we have also integrated cutting edge features and technology into this renovation. For instance, we removed all gas furnaces from the building and designed a natural heat-exchange system to provide geothermal space heating to the building during wintertime. The only energy used by our entire heating system is a small electric pump which provides a "heartbeat" to move fluid through the heat exchanger and through the floors of the building.
During the restoration process, a historic building will reveal its secrets. For instance, when we removed a section of rotten floor, we found ruins of 3 large concrete soaking tubs beneath. That room became "The Wet Room" -- a one-of-a-kind hot spring experience. A "soak" is often thought of as a passive and relaxing experience -- but The Blackstone's "Wet Room" is an exciting and interactive adventure. It is a tropical paradise, with water features flowing from the hot spring for soaking, steaming, showering and massage.
